Kerr Alhagie Malick Lower Basic School is situated in the northern region of The Gambia, very close to the Senegalese border.
Originally there was no school in the village until the villagers built a building. The community funded a teacher and the school opened in 2012; almost immediately the school was too small so a very basic extension was constructed from corrugated sheeting.
The school now has over 190 children on roll, which means there is an urgent need to replace the classrooms.
Plans have been drawn for a 3-classroom block with a storeroom and office. The local community have agreed to help make blocks, dig the foundations, transport sand & gravel and do other unskilled labour.
The estimated cost of this more substantial building is approximately £7500 / £8000. The Charity hopes to instigate this project in the very near future.
